Samoset Council, BSA

Since our founding in 1920 the mission of the Samoset Council has been to provide the necessary support services to ensure the success of our districts and the Scout units they support. These services include, but are not limited to, annual growth, successful fundraising, quality program, property utilization, staff development, and recruiting quality volunteer leadership at every level of the organization.
United Way

The Council will be successful in its efforts when a high percentage of the units within the Council achieve Quality Unit status and the mission statement of the Boy Scouts of America is a reality in the lives of those we serve.

AL & CHRIS HANNA EAGLE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

On behalf of Mr. & Mrs. Al and Chris Hanna, we are pleased to offer an application for a new Eagle Scout Scholarship Program.  The Al & Chris Hanna Eagle Scout Scholarship Program has been established to offer Samoset Council, BSA Eagle Scouts and Venturers with an opportunity to secure funding for higher education.  This new and exciting advanced educational support program is offered to all youth from Samoset Council, BSA; including Venturer youth.

We strongly encourage all Scouts to complete the Application for your chance to help fund advanced education.  Furthermore, the Selection Process is directed by a volunteer Selection Committee and they will annually announce the awardees among the applicants.  Each year the Application will be revised to ensure correct deadline dates for applications.  Finally, applicants should wait to apply until they are ready to attend college, such as during their “senior” year of high school.  Awards will not be committed for youth planning to attend college years in advance.

Accordingly, this funding is restricted to support the costs of tuition and institutional educational costs.  Therefore, you now have the unique opportunity as a Samoset Council, Eagle Scout to apply for this funding for your “2009” college or other advanced educational program.  If you are not planning to attend a higher educational institution in the fall, September of 2009, please wait to submit your application for another year; this program will be offered every year and an updated application will be available on the Council Website as well as in the Family Fire Newsletters.

Please review the Application for additional details and explanations:

PHILMONT EXPEDITION REGISTRATION FOR 2010 BEGINS OCTOBER 27, 2008

Reservation requests for 2010 Expeditions for Philmont Scout Ranch will be made on the internet beginning October 27 thru November 2 of 2008. The unit representative may log on to http://philmontreservations.wslive.com/2010 to make a reservation at 12:00 am Central Daylight Time from October 27-November 2, 2008.

The system will allow the unit representative to create a password to make changes or corrections to the unit reservation request entry either within their assigned week or during the open week. The representative will receive a confirmation e-mail at the conclusion of the request process. Only one record is kept on file for each unit. Once the reservation request process is completed, the computer will randomly select units to receive reservations. When

2010 reaches capacity, groups will be placed on a waiting list for 2010. Units with a confirmed 2009 reservation for Philmont may not place a request for 2010 – units may not attend in two consecutive seasons. Reservations may not be transferred from one unit to another. Philmont maintains a waiting list and will contact the next available group on the waiting list in the event of a cancellation. After the computer selection process is completed, an e-mail will be sent to each representative giving them their unit’s status. This will take place during the middle of December. A hard copy will be mailed in early January. A $50 non-refundable deposit, per participant will be due January 30, 2009. Questions about the 2010 registration process may be directed to Philmont Scout Ranch by e-mailing camping@philmontscoutranch.org or by phone: 575-376-2281. PLEASE NOTE: The Double H High Adventure Base will conclude six years of operation with the 2009 season. No reservations will be accepted for the Double H for 2010.

2009 Portaging to Scouting

Webelos is an 18-month program of the Boy Scouts of America. It is recommended that Webelos leaders begin contacting Troops in October of the boys’ second year to fulfill the requirement of the Arrow of Light. Webelos graduation can take place after the 18th month of the program, which is November of the second year. Webelos Scouts and their parents are encouraged to visit any Troop they like. Not all of the boys have to enter into the same Troop. Boys must be at least 10 years old to join Boy Scouting and earn the Arrow of Light.

All Scouts achieving Arrow of Light requirements before 5:30 p.m., 12/12/08 will be recognized with the “Portaging to Scouting Honor Roll” which includes $1 Boy Scout transfer fee and Boy Scout Registration paid by Samoset Council for 2009. Share the details of this year's program with Webelos by downloading the flyer on the link below.

Online Advancement Entry is Here!

Online advancement entry is here!  Samoset Council is excited to announce that units are now able to use Internet Advancement to record their youth member advancements from any online location with connectivity to Microsoft Internet Explorer and Adobe Acrobat for printing reports.  (Apple Based programs are not compatible.)

Samoset Council has an Internet Advancement page on the Council Web site with instructions and a link to this new functionality.  See the Online Tools tab. We currently have a power point presentation on the website for your review (see below).  It will show you how the process works.

Internet Advancement makes it easy for unit leadership to record awards, ranks, and merit badges to youth via an online process.  This system is separate from Internet Rechartering, but uses a similar concept.

Reports available from Internet Advancement:

  • Unit Advancement Summary shows ranks, merit badges, and awards saved in each person record for current registered members in your unit.
  • Advancement Report lists each youth member that has new ranks, merit badges, and awards, if any.  This is the official unit Advancement Report to be signed and submitted to the Scout Shop for awards.  Ranks will still need board of review date and signatures. The Eagle process will remain the same. Blue merit badge cards are still required for merit badges.
  • Unit Awards Summary lists the number of new ranks, merit badges, and awards by name as a shopping list.
  • Advancement Update Summary lists any ranks, merit badges, and awards that were already in the member record along with any new additions.

All units are encouraged to use this new system. In addition to all the listed benefits, please remember this program is free and can eliminate the need for other costly advancement programs.  The council will provide each unit with a unit ID, and the unit will assign an adult to record advancements. An informational packet will be mailed to each Unit Leader with all the necessary information needed for Internet Advancement. Ranks must be recorded based on program identifications and in the correct rank and date sequence.  Only the Eagle Scout rank cannot be awarded by this process.  That will continue to be processed through the Scout Service Center.  The signed advancement sheets and blue cards  will still be required in the Scout Shop for purchase of awards.

If you have any questions or comments, contact your Registrar at the Council Office 715-355-1450 or 1-800-303-2195 or email lois@samoset.org .
